Current Garden Updates!

11/10/2010

Hello all,

Well we've just dodged a bullet. Last week we had a Canadian cold air mass move down into NW Georgia, and temperatures dropped down into the low 20's. We even had sleet and snow flurries in some areas. Very unusual!

Needless to say, we did suffer some crop damage. I lost some late season bush beans, and some of the greens have frost bite. But I was able to put plastic up in time to save the majority of produce. Phew!

Temperatures are now back into the low 70's during the day, so I am still transplanting and seeding for Spring. I'm replanting my thinnings rather than tossing them. Yesterday I transplanted several hundred onion seedlings. They look great today.

Today I transplanted collards, raab, and tuscan kale that I moved into the bed where the beans were. I am hoping that the nitrogen fixed in the soil from the bean roots will help these late transplants continue to produce lots of wonderful green leafiness.

Let's keep out fingers crossed that we continue to enjoy this fantastic weather!

Hey all,

I wanted to share some of the neat things that are happening in the garden. At the moment I am beginning to harvest my first winter root crops for 2010. I pulled up quite a few Bulls Blood Beets that I plan to pickle today. I also have a lot of icicle radishes that I need to do something with, so I am thinking I might pickle these as well.

The only issues I am having are that the weather has been so warm my lettuces are bolting, but just those I planted in late summer. So far the leaves are still edible on most of the plants, only a few are bitter.

Fortunately I spaced out my seed planting and most of my lettuces and cabbages are still quite young and should do well through the rest of the Fall and Winter. With any luck I'll have them through to Spring!
